A Hole in the Middle (2008)
Music: “Itsutsu No Shohin – Niskikigi ni Yosete: Moegi, Ruri, Kohaku”, composed by Katsutoshi Nagasawa and performed by Nanae Yoshimura
In Taoist philosophy, an object comes into existence because of the empty space inside and around it. In this quartet for four women, the dancers become aware of their own emptiness, as well as the substance of the space that surrounds them. Supported by traditional Japanese koto music, “A Hole in the Middle” is soft and contemplative, but also rigorous and precise. Threads of connection become invigorated as the climax builds, but the dancers end by sinking into their own beings.
