And She’s Alone and I’m Alone (2008)

Music: “My Angel Rocks Back and Fourth” (Icarus Remix), Four Tet

This piece was created after I spent a little over a year living and working in Seoul, South Korea. The movement vocabulary is reminiscent of the blocked angularity of the Korean alphabet. In Hangul, each syllable exists in its own square — every vowel is enclosed by two consonants. Similarly, the dancers stay confined to their own space
for much of the piece. The mood I wanted to explore was that of disorientation, misunderstanding and separation of self. The self that we know in one language may be mutable in another. The sharpness of the dancers’ shifting shapes contrasts with the vulnerability they feel while attempting to be understood in a foreign tongue.
